South African anti-apartheid campaigner and retired Anglican Church bishop Desmond Tutu was given one of the British crowns highest awards on Monday (30 November). The Nobel laureate was presented the award by Prince Harry during a visit to the country.
Tutu was awarded the Order of the Companions of Honour. Admittance to the order is reserved for Britain and Commonwealth countries to bestow upon men and women who have provided services of national importance.
I stand out, or you stand out, in a crowd, only because you have been carried on the shoulders of others, Tutu told reporters after meeting Harry at the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation in Cape Town.
Later on Monday, Harry is due to visit a centre for youths at risk of joining criminal gangs.
