Manchester United edged out Inter Milan 5-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation, while Roma beat Real Madrid 1-0 in Tuesday's round of preseason friendly fixtures.
The Red Devils maintained their unbeaten run in this preseason at the expense of Inter Milan, who, in the end, fell short despite putting up a decent performance at FedEx Field in Maryland.
The first chance of the game arrived in the 11th minute when Phil Jones bulleted a powerful header towards goal after connecting with a Wayne Rooney corner. However, Inter Milan goalkeeper Samir Handanovic did brilliantly as he tipped the ball wide.
Seven minutes later, Rooney came close to breaking the deadlock, but thankfully for Inter his curling effort drifted just over the crossbar.
As the first half reached its closing stages, Juan Mata also came agonisingly close to opening the scoring, as he unleashed a fierce effort from 25 yards that flew just inches wide of the post.
United continued to dominate in the second half, despite Louis van Gaal bringing in an entirely different side after the break.
While Shinji Kagawa's effort at the half hour mark was just wide of the target, Tom Cleverley wasted an excellent opportunity as he headed Ashley Young's cross over the bar.
Despite their failure to create much chances in the game, Walter Mazzarri's side nearly grabbed the winner in the closing stages as Fredy Guarin's 25-yard freekick was just kept out by David de Gea.
The penalty shootout was a tense encounter as neither side missed the first seven penalties. However, after Marco Andreolli's spotkick thundered against the crossbar, Darren Fletcher calmly slotted the winning penalty, securing the third consecutive preseason victory for United.
Meanwhile, last season's International Champions Cup winners Real Madrid were knocked out of the preseason competition following a 1-0 loss to Roma.
Francesco Totti's second half strike proved to be enough as Real Madrid were unable to come back into the game despite creating a number of chances.
The game started with Real dominating, as Welsh winger Gareth Bale caused a lot of problems for Roma's defence from the left flank.
Soon enough, the €100 million signing got a chance to open the scoring in the 20th minute when he received a brilliant cross from Lucas Vazquez. However, in the end, Bale was unable to keep his calm as he sliced his effort wide of the target.
The Los Blancos continued to dominate as they created more chances, but somehow they failed to convert them into goals and the score remained goalless at halftime.
Finally, it was Roma who broke the deadlock in the 58th minute through Totti. Seydou Keita sent the ball towards Alessandro Florenzi, and the midfielder in turn whipped a cross towards Totti, who easily found the net with a sliding effort.
Although Real Madrid kept on searching for the equaliser, Roma held onto their lead, knocking out the Spanish giants out of the preseason tournament.
