The probe into the death of Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer Anurag Tiwari will now be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the UP government said on Monday, May 22. The development comes after an FIR was registered against unknown persons at the Hazratganj police station of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh in connection with Tiwari's
The FIR came on the same day the family of the Karnataka-cadre IAS officer visited UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and asked for justice for him. They also demanded a CBI probe into the case, and it seems that has come true. "It has been decided that the investigation [into Tiwari's murder] will be transferred to the CBI," UP Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar told reporters on Monday evening.
Tiwari, it may be remembered, had been found dead under mysterious circumstances in Lucknow on the morning of Wednesday, May 17. The body of the 36-year-old had reportedly been found on the road near the Meerabai Guest House located in the Hazratganj area.
On Monday early afternoon, his family visited UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and put forward their demand that his death be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). "We put forward our demands. He assured us that he would help, and asked us to wait for a special investigation team (SIT) probe," said Tiwari's sister-in-law Shobha Tiwari.
This SIT is the one that is already probing the case, given the mystery surrounding Tiwari's death. Reports say the only sign of injury on his body was visible on his chin.
The FIR in the case was filed following a formal written complaint by his Tiwari's brother Mayank Tiwari. Their mother Sushila told reporters after meeting Yogi Adityanath: "We asked [the chief minister] to find the reason behind Anurag's death."
