Aamir Khan starrer "PK" (Peekay) had a good weekend at the domestic box office, but the film failed to cross the ₹100 crore mark.
The film failed to beat Shah Rukh Khan's "Happy New Year" and Aamir's "Dhoom 3" record, but it did manage to break Salman Khan's "Kick" opening weekend total.
"PK" opening weekend total is second highest this year, after "Happy New Year". The Rajkumar Hirani directorial film minted ₹95.21 crore in first three days at the domestic box office.
The collection of "PK" is higher than "Kick" (₹83.83 crore) and Hrithik Roshan's "Bang Bang" (₹94.13 crore), but but lower than "Happy New Year" (₹108.86 crore), according to Bollywood Hungama.
"PK" had a slow start but the business of the film skyrocketed on Saturday and Sunday mainly due to positive reviews and strong word of mouth.
On Friday "PK" minted ₹26.63 crore, on Saturday it raked in 30.34 crore and on Sunday it earned ₹36.40 crore.
"PK" has now registered itself in the top 10 highest grosser film of 2014, but expectations were higher from the film. Aamir's last film "Dhoom 3" smashed almost all the records in India, as well as, overseas.
So, "PK" was expected to repeat the success of "Dhoom 3", but the collection of the film is lower than expected.
"It has collected at least Rs 55 crore in first two days. On the first day, it earned about Rs 26 crore. The next day, it managed to mint Rs 29 crore. They will earn profit, but expectations were higher," exhibitor Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines told IANS.
"The film is being liked by people in metropolitan cities. It will maintain steady figures in coming days," he added.
With Christmas holidays starting this week, "PK" is expected to have a good first week run.
"PK" features Anushka Sharma in female lead role, while Sanjay Dutt, Sushant Singh Rajput and Boman Irani have played the supporting character.
