Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone starrer "Piku" continues with its success run at the Indian box office in its third week. It is fast inching towards ₹70 crore mark in the domestic market.
Released in theatres on 8 May, "Piku" opened to a superb response and collected ₹41.42 crore at the Indian box office in the first week. Trade experts predicted that "Bombay Velvet", starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, would halt its dream run at the ticket counters in the domestic market.
However, with "Bombay Velvet" getting negative reviews, "Piku" became the first choice for many film goers in its second week. Having lost out some amount of theatres to the new release, "Piku" showed around 45 per cent dip and collected ₹23.8 crore at the Indian box office, taking its 14-day domestic total to ₹65.22 crore.
Trade experts once again predicted that the new release -- "Tanu Weds Manu Returns" -- would completely slow down the collection of "Piku". Besides losing some cinema halls, the two-week-old Hindi film clashed with the new big release. Compared to its second Friday collection, the business of the movie slipped down over 60 per cent on its third Friday.
However, "Piku" showed a decent growth the next day. The movie collected ₹1.35 crore on its third Friday and ₹2.40 crore on its third Saturday. The film has earned a total of ₹68.97 crore at the Indian box office in 16 days. Considering the early trends on its third Sunday, trade analysts predict that it will easily surpass the ₹70 crore mark in its third weekend.
Made with the budget of a whopping ₹35 crore budget, "Piku" recovered its production cost in just six days. In the next 10 days, the film earned almost 100 per cent profit from its theatrical run. The movie has become the biggest Bollywood money spinner at the ticket counters in 2015.
