Pictures and videos of a whale shark, which was spotted by several passersby near the Dubai Marina on Thursday afternoon, have gone viral.
Local emiratis eagerly took to the social media after the big fish was spotted swimming near the residential enclave in Dubai Marina, an artificial canal city, built on a three-kilometre stretch of Persian Gulf shoreline. It is said to be the fourth whale shark that has been spotted in Dubai waters in recent times. According to Gulf Digital News, whale sharks were spotted in 2006, 2011 and 2013 in the region.
According to Emirates 24/7, the "harmless creature" was spotted by local residents near the pedestrian walkway opposite the Cayan Tower. Since then, several photos and videos of the non-threatening species have been shared online.
The whale shark is a slow-moving filter feeding shark and the largest known extant fish species. Despite its intimidating size, it does not pose significant danger to humans.
