Despite lower than normal monsoon rainfall, the sowing of major kharif crops has increased marginally in India this year. According to the data released by Ministry of Agriculture, the overall sowing increased to 998.67 lakh hectare in 2015 compared to 979.40 lakh hectare area in 2014, a jump of nearly 2%. Sowing of rice, which forms the biggest portion of kharif crops, increased by little more than 1%, while that of pulses rose by over 11%.
