The 11-day Dasara (Dussehra) festival in Mysuru ended on Tuesday with a colourful victory parade, which was led by a dozen caparisoned elephants, from the royal palace. Thousands of people from across India attended the Dasara festival in the city.
On Tuesday, thousands of people gathered along the 5 km route to Bannimantap grounds to watch the procession, fireworks and the cultural show. A torchlight parade at night marked the end of the festival on Dasara, also called as Vijayadashmi.
The festival, which marks the victory of good over evil, is a state-sponsored fest ('nada habba') in Mysuru. Mysuru's titular Maharaja Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wodiyar, Queen Mother Pramoda Devi and other royal family members attended the festival along with celebrities and dignitaries, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Governor Vajubhai R. Vala. The procession kicked off with the worshipping of goddess Chamundeshwari, whose deity was placed in the 750 kg golden throne astride jumbo Arjuna.
The ongoing Cauvery river water issue and rains affected the festival spirit, but the final day procession remained unaffected. More than 1.5 lakh people witnessed the grand celebration of the Dasara festival despite the Cauvery issue.
