Showtime has given fans an opportunity to check out the season premiere of the psychological thriller, "Penny Dreadful", by releasing it online across multiple platforms. The first episode can be viewed for free on YouTube and on SHO.com.
In the second season, Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani) unite as evil forces wage war against them. The season will also document the personal wars waged by Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), the Creature (Rory Kinnear) and Brona (Billie Piper).
The first episode of the season is titled "Fresh Hell" and based on the synopsis, the protagonists are up against a whole new evil.
The synopsis reads: "Vanessa is barraged by an onslaught of disturbing occult images brought on by the mysterious Madame Kali. Because of the massacre he committed in the Mariner's Inn, Ethan believes he needs to leave London. Dr. Frankenstein works to bring Brona back to life while under the pressure from Caliban, who, in search of work after being let go at the Grand Guignol, applies at a wax museum. After Mina's funeral, Sir Malcolm returns to London to discover that a whole new evil is hunting Vanessa."
The main antagonist of the second season is Evelyn Poole, also known as Madame Kali, the role essayed by Helen McCrory. The character appeared in episodes 2 and 8 of season 1 and Madame Kali and her supernatural world will pose an even greater threat than expected.
"What excites me about the second season is that the cosmology of the show gets much larger," showrunner John Logan said, according to IGN. "In the second season, [our heroes] are thrown into a much larger theological world. [Kali's] supernatural world will then become the threat to the heroes."
Fans will also learn more about Ethan's backstory, his disastrous relationship with his father and how he became a werewolf.
"Penny Dreadful" airs 3 May on Showtime.
