The rebellious spirit of 80s rock and roll shook the house on 9 March at a star-studded Saint Laurent Paris fashion week show.

The show started with a bang and a rattle, as large chains lifted the runway off the ground and a girl punk bands music filled the hall in the citys Carreau du Temple.

Models bounded down the runway wearing torn-up fishnets and black leather boots, bright red lipstick and thick black winged eyeliner, a bit like early Joan Jett.

French designer Hedi Slimane, who took the reins of the fashion house in 2012 and changed the name from its previous Yves Saint Laurent, evoked the gritty glitz and glamour of the morning after through powerful yet feminine looks in his Autumn/Winter ready-to-wear collection.

Stars like American Actresses Salma Hayek and Jessica Chastain sat front row and gushed over the designs after the show.

Theres something aggressive about it but at the same time there is something very sensual about it. I loved it. This is the thing, I loved every single piece, Hayek said.

She and Chastain discussed the raciest number in the collection, a short black dress that exposed one of the models breasts and Hayek said she was sure Chastain could pull it off.

Actually, when I saw it, I thought, I could wear that with a bra! Maybe if you wear a bra, it could work with me, Chastain said, laughing.

Also in attendance were Vogue editor Anna Wintour, musician Mark Ronson and co-founder of Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Berge.

Paris Fashion Week runs through 11 March.
