Black Jack Randall's re-entry into Jamie and Claire's life has complicated things for the couple, and their relationship has once again become strained. Jamie isn't too pleased that Claire has requested him to spare Jack's life, and the next episode titled "Best Laid Schemes" will see their relationship going from bad to worse after Jamie breaks his promise.
Warning: This article contains spoilers from "Dragonfly in Amber," the second book in the "Outlander" series of novels by Diana Gabaldon.
In Gabaldon's book, Jamie duels with Jack and renders him impotent, and he is eventually sent to the Bastille for dueling. The couple also loses their child. However, all this happens a while after Claire extracts the promise from her husband, who agrees to wait for a while in a bid to set in motions the events that will eventually lead to Frank being conceived.
It remains to be seen how things work out in the Starz series and if it will remain faithful to its source material.
Actor Sam Heughan recently revealed that Claire's strange request has affected his equation with Claire. "The fact that she asks him to do this thing really tests him, and the moment that Jamie is kind of given this new lease of life, he's trapped again, and he's trapped by his actions. That really has some dire consequences further down the line," Heughan told Variety .
The official synopsis for "Best Laid Schemes" (via TVGuide) reads:
Claire's medical knowledge is used to devise a plan to halt a deal that would fill the war chest, but she learns Jamie has reneged on his word, and that leads to problems for both of them.
