Orange is the New Black will return with a new season on Friday, June 9, and all 13 episodes will drop at once on Netflix. Season 5 will play out in three days as Litchfield inmates riot, and the upcoming instalment is expected to be packed with a lot of action.
The previous season saw Piper and Alex reuniting and the former vowing to stay out of trouble. But with Litchfield in the middle of a riot, will Piper be able to keep her promise? It will really be difficult, as over the course of four seasons, Piper has transformed from a privileged white woman to a manipulative thug. And this transformation is something actress Taylor Schilling is delighted about.
"We take that idea of a lady hero that you all know and have seen before, and mess that up," she told Independent. "What if she is manipulative, not inherently likeable, amoral, self-interested, selfish, self-centred and it's not about serving someone else?"
"It's so uncomfortable for people, that is what I've found. It's uncomfortable for people to have a woman like this. It's almost like, how dare you not be likeable and just sit in the corner, white lady."
The opening moments of Season 5 will also see if Daya, who pointed a loaded gun at Humphreys in the Season 4 finale, pulls the trigger.
"I could see her pulling the trigger. Daya's definitely experiencing some postpartum depression," Dascha Polanco, who plays Daya, told The Hollywood Reporter. "She might pull back and think about being a mother and not wanting to miss the opportunity of being with her child. But a woman going through postpartum — at that point, they're very fragile and very sensitive."
Orange is the New Black will air on Colors Infinity on Saturday, June 10, from 11 am onwards.
