Five militants were killed by the security forces in an ongoing operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, a defence official said on Saturday.
"Five terrorists have been killed so far in the operation that began on Friday evening in Kiloora village," Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia told the media here.
Jammu and Kashmir Police chief S.P. Vaid tweeted: "Four more bodies of terrorists visible at encounter site (in) Kiloora, Shopian, taking the total to five terrorists killed. Good Job boys, good for peace."
The identities of the slain militants were not immediately known.
The valley has seen a rise in militant activity and a corresponding increase in Army counteroperations since the BJP walked out of the alliance with the PDP, leaving the state of Jammu and Kashmir under Governor's rule.
Militants in the region have been targeting army men, especially those off-duty and kidnapping and torturing them. On July 22, the police killed three LeT militants who tortured Trainee constable Muhammad Saleem Shah after abducting him from his home, before killing him and dumping the body.
Three days later, security forces gunned down to LeT militants in Anantnag, after a gunfight that lasted several hours. The rising rates of violence in the valley have seen the army and police respond swiftly after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited Kashmir ahead of Eid. During the visit, he promised to improve security at the border and announced a ceasefire with Pakistani troops during the Eid celebrations.
