Priyanka Chopra's "Jai Gangaajal" has got a better opening than the last female centric film "Neerja." The Priyanka-starrer has earned Rs 5.50 crore on its first day from the domestic box office, while Sonam Kapoor's "Neerja" earned Rs 4.70 crore.
"Jai Gangaajal" had the sixth best opening at the domestic box office this year. The film, which is a sequel to the 2003 film starring Ajay Devgn, features Priyanka Chopra in an action avatar. The film opened to mixed reviews Friday and also recorded an average first day box office collection. Released in 2,684 screens in India, "Jai Gangaajal" minted Rs 5.50 crore on day one.
"#JaiGangaajal Fri ₹ 5.50 cr. India biz," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, adding: "#JaiGangaajal screen count: India 2684 screens ... Overseas approx 300 screens."
With an average opening, this Priyanka-starrer failed to beat her last female centric film's record. Priyanka's "Mary Kom," which was released in 2014, had accumulated Rs 8.4 crore on day one, while "Jai Gangaajal" income is 30 percent less.
The film was expected to open on a bigger note considering it features Priyanka, who is making waves worldwide. Nevertheless, the film hardly has any competition at the box office this week, so it should dominate the market for a while.
Directed by Prakash Jha, the film features Priyanka as Superintendent of Police Abha Mathur, Prakash, who is making his acting debut, as inspector Bhola Nath Singh aka B.N. Singh and Manav Kaul as the main antagonist.
Another release "Zubaan," starring Vicky Kaushal and Sarah Jane Dias, has failed to open on a good note, despite receiving rave reviews from critics. "Zubaan" minted approximately Rs 50 lakh on the opening day. Like "Aligarh," "Zubaan" too received good reviews, but it will be difficult for the film to translate the buzz into money.
Directed by Mozez Singh, "Zubaan" is a musical drama starring Vicky and Sarah.
