Everyone's talking about OnePlus 6 and its new features on both hardware and software fronts but if you're feeling left out because you own former flagships OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 5T, here's some good news for you.
Owners of OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T devices are being treated to OxygenOS 5.1.4 update via OTA rollout. The latest software update brings several improvements and new features as well. Two major changes worth highlighting in the new OxygenOS update for 2017 flagships are sleep standby optimization and group messaging feature.
OnePlus explained the sleep standby optimization feature on its official forums and said that it would boost the battery life on OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. In case you're wondering how it works, OnePlus' new feature intelligently identifies a user's sleep pattern and limit certain battery-draining functions when the phone is inactive for extended periods.
When sleep standby optimization feature is turned on, the phone will turn off the network during specific periods of inactivity to reduce power consumption. But users won't have to worry about missing out on any notifications or updates as the phone would automatically cancel the network restrictions and snap out of Sleep Standby just before the user wakes up.
In order to activate the feature, users must navigate through Settings > Battery > battery optimization > click the three dots > Advanced optimization > Sleep Standby optimization.
OnePlus has also introduced group messaging support on OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T devices, alongside improvements to the camera, and July 2018 security patch. There are several bug fixes, including the ringtone bug with Android Auto that occurred due to unknown Bluetooth issues.
Hint of disappointment
OxygenOS 5.1.4 might have brought several changes, but missed some highly-anticipated ones. OnePlus gave a miss to Project Treble support for OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, but it was expected considering the company had already said Treble wasn't coming to these former flagships.
Another feature missing from the latest software update is the full colour-wheel accent selector, which is already out of beta but nowhere to be found in the new stable build, Android Authority noted.
Finally, the OxygenOS 5.1.4 is a staged rollout and the OTA update is likely to arrive over the coming days. OnePlus also noted that the software update rollout isn't based on region, so using a VPN won't really help in this case. Only a limited number of devices are getting the new software, but a broader rollout will happen in the next few days. Stay tuned for updates.
