Ekta Kapoor's "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara" starring Akshay Kumar as the don has opened to a terrific response on Independence Day in India, despite the limited number of screens.

According to early estimates, the film which opened to packed houses has raked in approximately ₹14.20 crore on the first day. The film was released in over 1,600 screens across the country on the opening day.

"OUATIMD garners RECORD preview numbers on Thursday in India on approx 1600 screens! ₹14.20cr Net!!!" Tanuj Garg, chief operating officer of Balaji Motion Pictures, said on Twitter.

"Pan-India occupancy is between 95% and 100%, and the movie has opened to a flying start in all centres country-wide," said Garg, according to Livemint.

The film's collections are expected to show an upward trend from Friday as its screen count will increase to over 2,700, according to reports. Another advantage is that that Bollywood film "Chennai Express" which was released on Eid will enter in its second week. Generally, the collections of the film go down in the second week, giving way for new releases.

On the opening day, the film was majorly affected due to previous release "Chennai Express" which is dominating the collection centres.

The crime thriller, which is the second installment to "Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai", has failed to impress critics. The film is riding high on Akshay's star value.

The collections were quite good in Delhi, UP, CP Berar, CI, Pune, Mumbai and Hyderabad circuits.

The film directed by Milan Luthria also features Sonakshi Sinha, Sonali Bendre and Imraan Khan in lead roles.
