Mani Ratnam's "OK Bangaram", starring Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen in the lead, has made brilliant collections at the USA box office in the first weekend of its release.
"OK Bangaram" reportedly had a paid premiere in some cinema halls in North America on Thursday, 16 April. The movie garnered stupendous response from the viewers in the country. The strong word of mouth took its business northwards on Friday. The movie went from strength-to-strength over the weekend.
The Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen starrer has collected $230,185 (₹1.45 crore) from 39 screens at the USA box office in the first weekend, while its Tamil version raked in $615,968 from 175 screens. Trade expert Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#OKBangaram [Telugu] - USA: Thu $ 12,397, Fri $ 60,963, Sat $ 103,465, Sun $ 53,360. Total: $ 230,185 [₹ 1.45 cr]. VERY GOOD! @RentrakIndia."
While "OK Kanmani" topped the USA business chart, "OK Bangaram" has landed at the second place. But Telugu version has collected $5,902 per screen at the USA box office and its per-screen average is much bigger and better than that of "OK Kanmani", which has got an average of $3,519 per screen.
"OK Bangaram" has taken a toll on the business of the one-week-old film "S/O Satyamurthy, which has collected $72,816 from 54 screens at the USA box office in the second weekend, taking its 11-day total to $1,235,073 (₹7.77 crore). The per screen average of the Allu Arjun starrer stands at $1,348.
However, "OK Bangaram" has become another big money-spinner of the year 2015 after "Gopala Gopala", "Temper" and "S/O Satyamurthy". This happens to be the first dubbed Telugu movie of 2015 to get such a huge response at the USA box office. It should be seen whether it would set a new benchmark.
