Tata Motors unveiled the Tiago, its first hatchback bearing new Impact design language, in December last year. After numerous rumoured launch dates, the company has officially announced it will launch the Tiago April 6.
Tata Motos changed name of the car from Zica due to the Zika virus outbreak in many countries earlier this year. The hassles pertaining to the name change delayed the launch of the car. Tata Motors commenced bookings for the hatchback from March 10, and its production started earlier this month at the manufacturing facility in Sanand. Many Tata dealerships have already started displaying the Tiago, and its test drives will begin soon.
The Tiago is based on the copiously tweaked Xo platform of the Indica. The powertrain of the hatchback includes a 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron petrol and a 1.0-litre three-cylinder Revotorq diesel engine. The petrol unit will develop 83.8bhp of power at 6,000rpm and 114Nm of torque at 3,500rpm, while the diesel engine will produce 69bhp of power 4,000rpm and 140Nm of torque at 1,800-3,000rpm. Both engines will come mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The new Tata hatchback will be offered in six body shades: Platinum Silver, Pearlescent White, Sunburst Orange, Berry Red, Espresso Brown and Striker Blue. Tiago will go up against the Hyundai i10, Maruti Suzuki Celerio and other models in the domestic market. Price estimates of the Tiago revolve around Rs 3.9 lakh to Rs 5.5 lakh.
