World number one Novak Djokovic produced some sublime form to clinch an unprecedented fifth mens title at Indian Wells with a 6-2 6-0 demolition of big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic in the mens final on 20 March.
Making history is always a great honour, a pleasure, Djokovic said afterwards of his five titles. I had the best possible start of the year, couldnt ask for more and then lets hope Im going to be able to maintain this high performance for Miami. The next Masters tournament starts on Wednesday 23 March in Miami and, if Djokovic wins that title, he will pull clear of Rafael Nadal as the player with the most Masters wins. Currently they are tied on 27 titles.
The 28-year-old Serb broke his out-of-sorts opponent twice in the first set and three times in the second to wrap up victory in one hour 17 minutes on a blazing hot afternoon at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California.
Australian Open champion Djokovic improved his stellar record for the year to 22-1 as he tied Nadals 27 ATP Masters 1000 crowns. Djokovic, who beat long-time rival Nadal 7-6(5) 6-2 in the semi-finals, also maintained his perfect record against Raonic as he won their sixth career meeting.
The Canadian was sidelined in February because of a groin injury that helped end his run in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, where he lost to Andy Murray in five sets.
