Japanese electronics major Sony released a feature-rich mid-range smartphone Xperia M into the burgeoning Indian handset market, earlier this week.
Prospective buyers who are thinking about making a shift from a feature phone to an MNC branded smartphone within the budget limit of ₹15,000, then Sony's Android OS based new Xperia M and Nokia's Windows Phone 8 OS powered Lumia 620 would make a good purchase.
Here is the brief description of main specification of Nokia Lumia 620 and Sony Xperia M:
Display:
Lumia 620 sports a 3.8-inch TFT LCD screen having 800x480p resolution and ClearBlack display technology which helps users to view mails and text more clearly even under the direct sunlight. On the other hand, Sony's Xperia M features a slightly bigger 4.0-inch scratch-resistant TFT FVGA display with 854x480p resolution. Both smartphones boast of almost the same pixel density close to 245 ppi (pixels per inch).
Processor:
In terms of power, Lumia 620 packs a Qualcomm based 1GHz dual-core krait processor with a graphics engine Adreno 305, whereas Sony features a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus chipset which also tops a CPU speed close to 1GHz and houses a Adreno 305 GPU.
Operating System:
The new Sony smartphone runs on Android mobile OS v4.1 Jelly Bean, whereas Lumia 620 ships with Windows Phone 8 OS out-of-the-box.
As per recent reports, the Android ecosystem currently holds the second largest collection of more than 800,000 apps, second only to Apple's app collection.
On the other hand, Lumia 620 users will have to settle with a little over 150,000 plus apps to choose from in the app store, but it has almost all popular games such as Angry Birds, Temple Run, Fruit Ninja and utility applications as well. That's not all, Lumia phones in India are said to receive Amber update soon. The new update is expected to bring new camera apps, screen glance and FM radio features to handsets.
Camera:
Lumia 620 sports a 5.0-megapixel main camera with 720p HD video-recording and a VGA front camera. The upcoming Amber update for Windows Phone 8 is said to bring in new camera app 'Smart Camera' with numerous editing tools, better noise reduction, improved colour rendering, exposure metering and enhanced autofocus features to Lumia 620 in the coming weeks.
Sony Xperia M too packs a pretty good 5.0-megapixel main camera with exclusive Exmor RS lens sensor technology, LED flash support and capable of recording 720p HD video and 4X digital zoom. It also houses a 0.3-megapixel VGA camera on the front side.
Memory:
Sony Xperia M comes with 4GB storage capacity with options of expanding memory up to 32GB and packs 1GB RAM. The Nokia smartphone, in comparison, comes with 8GB internal memory capable of expanding up to 64GB via micro-SD card, but the only disappoint is that it ships with 512MB RAM which limits users from playing heavy duty games on the smartphone.
Price:
Currently in the market, Nokia Lumia 620's price is hovering between ₹12,500 to ₹14,200 based on the colour variants, whereas the Xperia M priced ₹12,990. Considering the price and specifications among the two devices, the Sony handset makes a smart buy. It is to be noted that Xperia M is the only smartphone in the market to pack 1GB RAM in its class.
