Finnish smartphone manufacturer Nokia has released a new version of its budget-priced Nokia 114, claiming the device to be the first of its kind to feature Urdu launguage compatible keypad.
Nokia 114, which was initially released in January, already supports 11 different Indian dialects - Kannada, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Oriya, Assamese, Punjabi, Marathi, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil. Now, with the addition of Urdu, Nokia is expected to extend its reach to the 15 crore plus Urdu speaking population in the subcontinent with its new smartphone.
Commenting on the launch, Union Telecom Minister, Kapil said, "When Nokia came to me 6 to 8 months back, I asked them if they could take a challenge to bring mobile phone for about 15 crore Urdu speaking people and I appreciate their initiative."
"Over time we have developed supporting language capability in our device but one thing that we were missing was Urdu. I was told by the Minister that there are about 150 million Urdu speaking people in the country. We accepted challenge given by him," said P Balaji, Nokia India Managing Director.
Nokia 114 sports 1.8-inch LCD display with 160x128p resolution and runs on 'Series 40' interface. It is backed by BL-5C battery which support close to 10.5 hours of talk time and up to 637 hours on standby mode.
It house a 0.3-megapixel VGA camera with 4X zoom feature and supports microSD card to expand memory up to 32GB.
The company has reportedly confirmed that Nokia 114 (with Urdu support) has been made available in Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The device will be launched in other parts of the country soon.
