A Delhi Police officer shot himself dead with his service revolver, while his wife jumped off the fourth floor of their apartment on Monday night in Noida near Delhi.
The wife of the deceased policeman, Amit Singh, sustained multiple fractures and is in critical condition.
"She has been admitted in a private hospital in critical condition," IANS quoted a police official as saying.
The incident took place around 10 pm at Lotus Boulevard in Sector 100, reported The Hindu.
Singh apparently locked himself in a room and shot himself, after which his wife attempted suicide as well by jumping off the balcony of their apartment, reported PTI.
After receiving information about the incident, the police rushed the couple to a hospital where Singh was declared dead. The police have started an investigation to find out the motive behind the suicide.
"The sequence of events is not clear. They have a daughter. Let us complete investigations. Then we can say [what happened]," said senior Noida police officer Dinesh Yadav.
Singh was an Assistant Commissioner of Police with the Special Cell of the Delhi Police. He was a Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Service-cadre subordinate police service officer of the 2010 batch.
The couple has an 18-month-old daughter.
