Republican billionaire Donald Trump on Monday secured more than 270 votes from the Electoral College to ensure his seat as the 45th President of America.
There was a campaign by anti-Trump protesters to persuade the electors of the Republican party to abandon their vote for the US President-elect. However it was not fruitful and the majority of the electoral votes were finally given to Donald Trump officially.
There was lobbying to influence the electors after Donald Trump's unprecedented US election victory on November 8 and opponent Hillary Clinton's sweeping victory in the popular voting.
After Trump's victory, the billionaire's Republican rival Ohio Governor John Kasich had said that it was time to get behind the US President-elect. He has said, "We want unity, we want love."
According to reports, Trump gained a total of 304 votes over Clinton's 224, with Hawaii still to vote. To win the US presidency, the nominees are required to clinch a total of 270 Electoral votes. Although two Republican electors cast protest votes against Trump in Texas, the state put the Republican nominee at the top.
Urging the Republican electors to abandon their votes for Trump, thousands of protesters assimilated outside the state capitols across the country. Reports state that more than 200 demonstrators standing outside the Pennsylvania's capitol chanted: "No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA!, No treason, no Trump!" against the US President-elect, according to the Associated Press (AP) reports.
Protesters from Wisconsin also gathered together in Madison to protest against the Republican winner and sang "Silent Night." Hundreds of protesters in Augusta, Maine banged drums and held signs saying, "Don't let Putin Pick Our President," referring to the alleged interference of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the US election.
