Mercedes' Nico Rosberg came up with a superb performance to clinch the Mexican grand prix on Sunday, while his team mate Lewis Hamilton, who has already won the Formula One title, had to be satisfied with a second place finish.
Rosberg, who started in pole position, looked in great form as he started the race very well, which was very important with Hamilton behind him. Rosberg said that he had been trying to get everything perfect in a race for some time and it worked in the Mexican grand prix.
"I've been working on it to try and get everything perfect and today it worked out to be first and that was important, maybe the most important part of the race, so I'm very happy about that," said Rosberg.
There was enough competition between the two drivers -- Hamilton and Rosberg -- in the third last race of the season and the German driver looked in complete control of the race.
"Great race, great battle with Lewis, he drove really well. Just really, really happy to get the win and this is really the best podium of the year, what a place to do it," added Rosberg.
However, there was a big disappointment for Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who collided with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo in the first corner. Both the Ferrari drivers – Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen -- had to retire from the race.
With such a disappointing performance, Vettel surrendered his second position to Rosberg, who has accumulated 272 points so far as compared to Vettel's 251. There are still two more races remaining in the Formula One season. Can Vettel catch Rosberg? Only time will tell.
All the drivers, who participated in the Mexican grand prix, loved racing in Mexico as the atmosphere was brilliant. Hamilton, who praised Rosberg for a splendid performance, said that he had never seen a crowd like this as he felt the atmosphere was like a football game.
"Nico drove a fantastic race and it's just been fantastic to be here in Mexico. I've never seen a crowd like this; it's like football game. The fans have been amazing. I've never seen anything like this," said Hamilton.
Rosberg considers the Mexican GP podium finish as the best in the year and also thanked the people of Mexico for making the race extra special with their support and love of Formula One.
"The Mexican podium? It's the best podium of the year, I think, to be in a stadium like that and the atmosphere and the energy was just unbelievable, so I'm really thankful to all the Mexican people and to all the people that have been here today, for the massive support also. Really special," Rosberg said.
