Nicki Minaj, the "Anaconda" hitmaker, has been pretty coy about her past but in a recent interview, the singer revealed that she had an abortion that almost killed her – emotionally.
In a candid interview with The Rolling Stone magazine, Minaj opened up about her latest album "The Pinkprint," which is supposedly her most personal album to date.
"One of my goals was to give people a glimpse into my personal life, because it's something I've kept very private," Minaj told the magazine.
"I struggled with 'Do I express these feelings?' And I decided there's no reason for me to hide. I'm a vulnerable woman, and I'm proud of that," she added.
Talking about her emotional melting point, Minaj revealed that she got pregnant when she was in her teens.
"I thought I was going to die. I was a teenager. It was the hardest thing I'd ever gone through," Minaj said.
She confessed that her first love was an older guy from Queens she dated when she was attending the performing-arts school high school LaGuardia. She said the decision to have the abortion has haunted her all her life but realizes that it was the right thing to do at that time because she wasn't ready and had nothing "to offer a child."
Minaj also talked about her "Anaconda" video and said she hasn't stopped inspiring girls to being smart and sexy.
"I stand for girls wanting to be sexy and dance, but also having a strong sense of themselves. If you got a big ol' butt? Shake it! Who cares? That doesn't mean you shouldn't be graduating from college," she added.
Minaj addresses the abortion issue on a track in her album "the Pinkprint." The lyrics to the song titled "All Things Go" are:
"I want Caiah to go to college just to say we did it," referring to her younger brother Micaiah.
"My child with Aaron, would've been 16 any minute
So in some ways I feel like Caiah is the both of them
It's like he's Cai's little angel looking over him," she raps.
The lyrics stirred up a lot of speculation and Minaj admitted having to adjust to the string scrutiny.
"The Pinkprint" is Minaj's third studio album and was released in December 2014. Her single "Anaconda" topped charts all over the world and also became her highest charting single in the US till date.
