Hype around Google's Nexus 6 has increased with its release date drawing near but the stupendous success of Xiaomi Mi3 in price-conscious markets like India might have crossed the minds of its makers. However, superior features may help Google's device to survive challenge from the Chinese handset.
The Xiaomi Mi3, which was released last month, witnessed its fifth flash sale on Tuesday, selling 20,000 units in just 2.3 seconds. This mad rush on the budget smartphone and the huge price difference will give the makers of Nexus 6 a reason to worry. The handsets from Chinese mobile phone makers cost ₹13,999 but Google's next-generation smartphone may cost around ₹30,000 if the price of its predecessor is any indication.
However, Google's device has several features superior to Xiaomi Mi3, which will give it an upper hand in the smartphone market.
The Nexus 6 may sport a 5.2-inch full HD screen with 1080x1920 pixels resolution, while Xiaomi Mi4 sports a 5.0-inch full HD screen with 1920x1080p (441 ppi pixel density). Google device might be powered by Quad-core MT6732 64-bit chip or the octa-core MT6752 SoC and run on yet-to-be launched software Android L, according to G4Games. On the other hand, Xiaomi Mi4 has a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and run on Android v4.4 KitKat OS.
It is not sure if Nexus 6 will come with a 20MP camera or a 13MP main camera and a 5MP front snapper when it is released, while Xiaomi Mi4 has a 13MP main camera and 8MP front camera. Xiaomi's device has a 3080 mAh (Li-Ion Polymer) battery and comes with 16/64GB internal memory and 3GB RAM, while Nexus 6 may have 32 GB internal memory with 3GB RAM and 3100 mAh Li-Polymer battery.
Media reports suggested that Nexus 6 will come with a curved LCD display and a lightweight, polycarbonate body. On connectivity front, it may feature Wi-Fi, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and micro-USB connectivity slot. Xiaomi Mi3 on the other hand has 3G & 4G LTE, water-repellent nano-coating, IR-blaster, stainless steel frame, Wi-Fi (802.11 ac; dual-band: 2.4/5.0 GHz), Bluetooth v4.0, Bluetooth HID, and other standard connectivity features.
Google hasn't revealed the release date of Nexus 6 but several reports claimed that it may be launched in November after announcing in October. Sundar Pichai, VP at Google had said a few months ago at the Mobile World Congress 2014 (MWC 2014) that the device would be announced in October.
