Volkswagen Indian launched an iconic small car, the Beetle, in India priced at Rs 28.73 lakh, ex-showroom, Mumbai. The German company had started a dedicated webpage for bookings of the new Beetle through payment of an initial amount of Rs 1 lakh on 17 November.
The new Beetle will be sold in just a single variant in four colours: Habanero Orange, Oryx White, Tornado Red and Blue Silk. The Beetle, which is also known as the "bug car" globally, will feature bi-xenon headlamps, front fog lamps, electrically foldable ORVMs, a rear spoiler, dual exhaust and 16-inch alloy wheels.
The Beetle in its latest avatar is slightly angular in design as opposed to the rounded edges of the previous models.
The interior is updated with a dual-zone air-conditioning system, multi-function display, an audio system with eight speakers, panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming rear view mirror and cruise control. The Beetle will also feature leather upholstery and heated front seats.
The new Beetle is powered by an in-line four-cylinder 1395cc TSI petrol engine developing 148bhp and 250Nm of torque, mated to seven-speed DSG transmissions. The car comes with a 0-100kmph time of 8.7 seconds and top speed of 203kmph.
The Volkswagen Beetle is not a completely new model in India. The car in its previous version was available in India in 2013, but was discontinued owing to poor demand.
"The Beetle is an iconic car that has scripted automotive history for over six decades, and we are delighted to announce the India launch of the 21st Century Beetle. Carrying forward its unmistakably timeless charm, blended with modern day technological sophistication, the 21st Century Beetle now comes with rounded yet masculine proportions and a host of refined, irresistible internal and exterior features. We are confident of continuing the Beetle's legacy in India and we believe that the biggest addition to the 21st Century Beetle is the element of unlimited fun," said Michael Mayer, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India.
