The new and upcoming "Power Rangers" reboot will not feature the campy costumes from the original series. The makers have decided to jazz things up a bit by giving the heroes new armoured suits which are more in sync with this day and age.
In the film, the "Power Rangers" will don a translucent extraterrestrial armour that crystallises around their bodies. However, these new outfits will retain visual throwbacks to the franchise's long-running mythology. You can check out the new costumes on Entertainment Weekly.
"The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis," director Dean Israelite ("Project Almanac") told Entertainment Weekly. "These suits needed to feel like they were catalysed by these kids and their energy, their spirit."
The makeover will also help the Rangers distinguish themselves from the already-crowded world of spandex-ed superheroes.
"It's tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume," production designer Andrew Menzies ("G.I. Joe: Retaliation") admitted. "Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that's not man-made. You can't win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans."
Talking about the new costumes, actress and singer Becky G, who plays Trini/Yellow Ranger, said: "It's the coolest costume ever. I'm gonna wear it for Halloween for, like, five years."
Also starring Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy, "Power Rangers" is slated to release on March 24, 2017.
