We haven't heard anything about Toyota's next generation Innova for quite some time now. The model, which has been spotted several times during its test round in the country, is expected to reach Indian showrooms only by 2016.
The folks at MotorOctane have managed to get more details on the upcoming Innova, including the powerplant of the model. Going by the latest report, the new 2016 Innova will be based on a new chassis, which is likely to be 80-90 kgs lighter than the existing model. The current Innova rides on the IMV platform that it shares with Fortuner and Hilux.
As for the engine, the new Innova will reportedly get much powerful 2.0 or 2.2 liter diesel mills and changes are also likely to be seen in its styling and design. The new generation Innova is expected to get a more aggressive and sporty styling, and is likely to be positioned above the current model.
From what we have seen so far, the new 2016 Innova will most probably flaunt a new front bumper and a bigger windshield. Inside the cabin, the model is expected to get dual tone donned interior with big multi-info touchscreen and 3-spoke steering wheel.
The 2016 Innova will compete against the likes of Honda Mobilio, Chevrolet Enjoy and Nissan Evalia in India.
Meanwhile, the report also indicates that the maker of Innova is planning to introduce a new Innova cross in lieu of the outgoing Innova. Expected to get a styling and design similar to the Etios Cross, the Innova cross is likely to hit the Indian roads early 2017. The power is likely to come from the same 2.5-litre diesel engine of the current Innova with five-speed manual transmission.
