The Central Board of Secondary Education has said that it is not possible to declare the NEET 2017 results on Thursday, June 8. The board made the revelation before the Madras and Gujarat high courts.
The court on May 24 had granted an interim stay on the results of the NEET exams after a petition had challenged the different sets of question papers for English and other vernacular languages.
CBSE, on Tuesday, said that the results could not be declared on June 8 as the board would need about 15 days to declare the results after the court lifts the stay. It also said that the stay needs to be lifted soon as the future of about 11.38 lakh students is currently hanging by a thread.
"The delay in declaring results due to the interim order is already beyond permissible limit. The CBSE will require 15 days to declare the result if it is permitted to do so," the Times of India quoted the CBSE counsel as saying.
The Gujarat High Court Justice SG Shah also said that CBSE's claims that two sets of question papers were made to curb the chances of leaks were baseless. "If the officer says there is a possibility of leakage (only in vernacular language), I am not going to pardon him," Shah said.
The NEET exams were held on May 7 in 10 languages.
The CBSE has been in the eye of the storm for a while now. The board had delayed the results of class 12 and class 10 exams as well after the Delhi High Court had ordered it to retain the much-discussed moderation policy this year.
Under the policy, the board awards grace marks to students for difficult questions.
CBSE had earlier decided to scrap the moderation policy this year itself, a move that had not gone down well with the students as well as the parents. However, the court then ordered CBSE to retain the system this year and calculate the marks of the students accordingly, which in turn delayed the results by a few days.
