The third instalment in the National Treasure franchise is in works. However, though the fans are looking forward to the movie, there hasn't been much news on the development so far.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Nicolas Cage, who portrays the protagonist Benjamin Franklin Gates in the movies, talked about what fans can expect from the movie and why there is so much delay in the third instalment during his recent press tour for his latest movie, "The Trust."
"I haven't really heard anything about that. I do know that those scripts are very difficult to write, because there has to be some credibility in terms of the facts and fact-checking, because it was relying on historical events. And then you have to make it entertaining. I know that it's been a challenge to get the script where it needs to be. That's as much as I've heard. But they're still working on it," Cage said.
The last movie in the franchise titled "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" was released in 2007. According to Comic Book, the film earned $219,964,115 million domestically, and $457,364,600 million worldwide while the original 2004 movie garnered $173,008,894 million domestically and worldwide earned $347,512,318 million.
It might be a while when the fans will get to see their favourite franchise return to the big screen. However, Cage is currently busy with several other projects, including "Snowden" (co-starring with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, and Timothy Olyphant) "Army of One" (with Rainn Wilson and Wendi McLendon-Covey). Apart from it, he is also set to reprise the role of Grug in "Croods 2."
