Kangana Ranaut won a National Award for her dual turn in "Tanu Weds Manu Returns" ("TMWR"). The actress said the win was "unexpected" and overwhelming; the news made her and the family "emotionally paralyzed."
Explaining why it was such a shocker for her, she told Pinkvilla that the organisers do not send letters to recipients and announce them directly on television. She said it was "gratifying" to be honoured by the president of the country.
"It is great for anyone to get the highest honour of the country. We are excited and thrilled," she told the entertainment portal. Talking about the characters she played in "TWMR" — Tanuja Trivedi and Kumari Kusum Sangwan — Kangana said she had put in a lot of effort to essay them differently.
"I gave Tanu lot of expressions, hand movements. For Datto I gave lot of swag. So I had literally split myself into two personalities. Double roles or triple roles are rare so when I did it, I couldn't believe it," she added.
This is her third win; she picked up the Best Supporting Actress Award for "Fashion" (2010) and the Best Actress trophy for "Queen" (2014).
While Kangana plans on having a low-key celebration with those who "rooted" for her and believed in "underdog" stories, a section of social media users isn't too pleased about the win. Here's what they have to say:
Herr Omkar Koolkarni: And #KanganaRanaut winning for #TanuWedsManuReturns is PREPOSTEROUS. Seriously there were better performances than that. #NationalAwards
Vinisha Valsan: #NationalAwards not happy with #KanganaRanaut winning best actress @kalkikanmani deserves that honour, @Nawazuddin_S deserved award too
N e h a r: Kangana Ranaut was pleasant to watch, but she didn't deserve it. She was not exceptional. Her performance felt artificial #NationalAwards
