India marks the 48th death anniversary of the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, on Sunday, by paying homage to him.
President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath paid floral tribute to Nehru at Shanti Van, on the banks of Yamuna River, where he was cremated.
Regional prayer meeting was organized today in the memorial premises.
Nehru was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad and died on May 27, 1964 due to a heart attack.
Nehru completed his graduation from Cambridge University and returned to India in 1912.
Nehru, who was popularly known as 'Panditji,' was also a writer, scholar and amateur. Children across the nation call him as "Chacha Nehru."
