Lyricist and poet Na Muthukumar's death has come as a big shock to the Tamil film industry. He passed away at the age of 41 due to jaundice. In his career, he penned over 1500 songs for Tamil films and was known as 'Kavi Ilavarasan' in Kollywood. Apart from penning a novel called "Silk City," he also published many collections of poems.
Na Muthukumar, who hailed from Kancheepuram, and was a son of a school teacher, had good grip over the Tamil language since his childhood, but his first passion was to become a filmmaker. To learn the nuances of filmmaking, he worked under legendary filmmaker Balu Mahendra. But again it was his control over the language that got him a break as a song writer. He wrote his first track for the film Seeman's "Veeranadai."
His song writings got noticed soon by many filmmakers and he went on to work with top directors like AR Murugadoss, Selvaraghavan, Bala, Dharani, Bala, Lingusamy, Gautham Menon and many others. He graduated into dialogues writing with AL Vijay's "Kireedam."
"Aanandha Yazhai Meetugiraai" song in "Thanga Meengal" and "Azhage Azhage Ethuvum Azhage" track in "Saivam" won him National Awards. Some of the popular films that he worked were "Kaadhal Kondein," "Ghilli," "Chandramukhi," "Vaaranam Aayiram" and "Theri." He rose to stardom in a short time and won the hearts of millions with his beautiful lyrics.
