Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Kadir Rana, who was evading an arrest in a communal riots case, has been remanded for 14 days in judicial custody on Tuesday.
As per India Today report, the BSP Lok Sabha MP from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, surrendered himself at the local court.
He was among the politicians facing arrest for inciting communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar in August that claimed lives of nearly 50 people and displaced 40,000 others.
Rana allegedly made incendiary remarks on 30 August after the Friday prayers, when public gatherings were banned by the authorities after three young men were killed due to a communal dispute.
The Muzaffarnagar MP had gone missing since 15 September and reportedly refuted the allegations charged against him by saying that he was in the Parliament on the day of his alleged speech despite a video shot that showed Rana attending the gathering.
"He is being framed, his words have been twisted out of context. He will soon come out and speak to the media" Rana's secretary had told NDTV.
Sources told NDTV news channel that Rana had signed the Lok Sabha register after returning to New Delhi, which has been a common practice among parliamentarians.
Rana left the Samajwadi Party in 2007 to join Rashtriya Lok Dal and then switched to BSP in 2009. There are a total of four criminal cases against him, including murder, attempt to murder and robbery.
