A 20-year-old man was lynched at a village in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district over suspicion of being a buffalo thief on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Shahrukh who used to work as a tailor in Dubai and had recently come home. According to Superintendent of Police (City) Abhinandan Singh, four people have been arrested so far.
Shahrukh and three others had gone out last night when a group of locals caught them and suspecting that they had stolen a buffalo.
Shahrukh was thrashed by the group while his friends managed to escape, police said. He was admitted to hospital in serious condition and later succumbed to his injuries.
According to the post-mortem examination, the severe beating was the cause of death, the SP said. Both sides have lodged FIRs.
An FIR has been lodged against 30 unidentified villagers under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
