To honor the legacy of the King of Gazals, Late Shri Jagjit Singh, a prominent square in Bandra, Mumbai has been named after him.
The junction of KC Marg and Bandra Reclamation has been renamed to "Padma Bhushan Jagjit Singh Chowk". The installation and renaming ceremony was officiated by Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray in the presence of Mayor Snehal Ambekar.
The occasion was attended by the late singer's wife Ms.Chitra Singh, his grandson Armaan Chowdhury and top government dignitaries.
Armaan, who was visibly emotional, said "I'd especially like to thank Uddhav Thackerayji, Anil Desaiji and all others involved for such a beautiful gesture."
Fondly called King of Gazals Shri Jagjit Singh was famous for his deep melodious voice, soulful lyrics and for making the otherwise esoteric form of music accessible to listeners from all walks of life.
In a career spanning more than 5 decades he lent his voice to a plethora of songs and ghazals. His albums ' The Unforgettable' and 'The Independent' are groundbreaking works in Indian music. He also composed music for many movies including Prem Geet, Arth and Saath - Saath.
For his contributions to music and art, Late Shri Jagjit Singh has been conferred with many prestigious awards like Padma Bhushan Award, Rajasthan Ratna Award, Sahitya Academy Award awards and multiple film and television awards.
Jagjit Singh is undoubtedly one of the most successful Ghazal composers and musicians in history and this chowk further cements his legacy.
