About 40 couples looking for privacy in hotel rooms in Mumbai's popular Madh Island and Aksa suburbs on Thursday were in for a shock of their lives when police knocked on their doors.
The Malwani police reportedly 'caught' the couples, among whom were college students, and charged them with 'indecent behaviour in public', despite the fact that they were all consenting adults inside private hotel rooms, Mid Day reported.
The police detained many of the couples for more than five hours, and even forced some of them to call their parents, leaving them humiliated.
A 19-year-old girl who was among those 'caught' in the raid even contemplated suicide following the humiliation, according to the newspaper report. "I am literally contemplating ending my life because of the trauma and the stigma from the raid. I haven't been able to step out of the house and my parents have also not spoken a single word to me since this morning," she said.
The report has angered several people, who called the police raid a sheer breach of privacy, and condemned the 'sex ban'.
Several prominent Twitterati condemned the police action on Twitter. Among those were musician Vishal Dadlani and comedians Vir Das and Ashish Shakya.
Here are some of the tweets with which Twitterati hit back at the Mumbai police for picking up consenting adults from hotel rooms.
Personally, I think that police harassing women outside a hotel is much more 'Publicly Indecent' than getting a room with someone you love.

Nice. I've always wondered what it'd be like to live in Saudi Arabia. https://t.co/L036KGNwFC — Ashish Shakya (@stupidusmaximus) August 8, 2015
No dirty jokes. No porn. & now consenting adults in private arrested. Our authorities spend way too much time thinking about us naked.

This police-state nonsense is going mad! How can it be 'public indecency' if they were in hotel rooms? #sexbanned ? http://t.co/uNAafATLft
