The anti-corruption wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an income tax official from Mumbai on Friday in a corruption case.
Joint Commissioner M Jhagran was arrested on Friday morning for accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from a private firm owner for helping with tax evasion, said reports.
A case was registered by the company owner after Jhagran reopened his construntion firm's Income Tax Assessment file and threatened his chartered accountant to settle the matter.
The joint commissioner had allegedly demanded a Rs 30 lakh bribe, which was later negotiated to Rs 25 lakh and agreed to take Rs 5 lakh as first instalment.
The CBI laid a trap and caught his red-handed as he accepted the bribe from the complainant. It also searched the residential and office premises, from where property documents, gold jewellery and coins weighing 1.5kg were seized along with other incriminating files.
Jhagran was reportedly produced before the competant court on Friday.
On 29 August, Income Tax Commissioner Daya Shankar was also arrested after being caught red-handed by the CBI for accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh.
