The MTV Video Music Awards 2016 will see the biggest names in pop competing for the top awards. Beyonce, Calvin Harris, Justin Bieber and Rihanna are among the artists leading the nominations in the most prestigious categories but will they be triumphant on the big night?
Taking place at New Yorks Madison Square Garden on Sunday 28 August, the VMAs will see performances from Ariana Grande with Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Lukas Graham, Troye Sivan and Nick Jonas to name a few. Rihanna, 28, will also perform a medley of her hit singles after being honoured with the Michael Jackson Vanguard award.
But who will take home the top gongs? IBTimes UK predicts who will walk away winners at the MTV VMAs 2016.
Video of the year: Beyonce – Formation
Queen Bey is highly likely to win the most prestigious award of the evening. The singers controversial video pushed the boundaries of pop by addressing hard-hitting issues such as the racial tension in America and the Black Lives Matter movement.
The Melina Matsoukas-directed visuals also hold no bars with the singer sinking a police car and calls for an end to police brutality through graffitied messages. Pop tends to gloss over political but Beyonce set a new standard. Plus with 11 nominations to her name, Beyonce stands a strong chance of taking the main award.
Best male video: Drake – Hotline Bling
Hotline Bling might just be the most memed music video to date. The video is simple in its delivery for the most part with Drake cutting shapes in a neon-lit room but it was the rappers awkward dance moves which made it iconic. The video made everyone talk, bringing back the true essence of what a music video should do.
Best new artist – DNCE
Joe Jonas had a difficult task of distinguishing himself away from bubble of The Jonas Brothers and he has managed to do it successfully. DNCE have developed such a cool sound that sounds trendy and like nothing else on the charts. Cake By The Ocean is an incredibly catchy track and they went against typecast by starring plus-size model Ashley Graham in their Toothbrush video.
Best female video: Adele – Hello
Adeles made a terrific comeback with Hello in November 2015. The nostalgic ballad became a social media phenomenon for many reasons but rather humorously because she used a flip-phone in 2016. Theres something about the video that boasts a classic feel and was timeless before it even grew momentum.
