Former India cricket skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has emerged as the highest taxpaying individual in Jharkhand and Bihar region for the financial year 2017-18. According to income tax officials, Dhoni paid Rs 12.17 crore income tax last fiscal, which is Rs 1.24 crore higher than what he had filed in the year 2016-17.
"Dhoni had paid Rs 10.93 crore as income tax in 2016-17 but he was not the highest taxpayer in that fiscal," V Mahalingam, chief commissioner of Income Tax of Jharkhand region was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Dhoni was also the highest taxpaying individual in the financial year of 2013-14. The 37-year-old wicket-keeper batsman is currently in the list of 'A category' players under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Dhoni also owns several business ventures and has amassed a massive fortune by endorsing global brands.
Dhoni was featured in the Forbes top 100 richest athletes in 2015. He had earned $31.5 million in 2015, that includes a $3.5 million in salary and $28 million in endorsements, reports The Times of India.
After Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni is the third-highest earning cricketer in India. He was ranked at the 8th spot in the Forbes India list of the highest earning celebrities with an estimated earning of Rs. 63.7 crore in 2017.
The former Indian skipper has recently launched his apparel line called SEVEN. In his sporting ventures, Dhoni co-owns the Indian Super League called Chennayin FC and is the joint owner of Ranchi Rays franchise in the Hockey India League.
