The 3D science fiction thriller received only 10 to 20% occupancy on opening day at the ticket window.
Due to low ticket sales, the film managed to earn only ₹4.5 crore on opening day. The opening day box office collection of "Mr X" is lower than Sushant Singh Rajput starrer "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" and Sunny Leone's "Ek Paheli Leela".
"#MrX Fri ₹ 4.5 cr. India biz," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted about the opening day figure.
The film starring Emraan in the lead role received mixed to negative comments from critics on its release. The word of mouth is also not strong that might affect the long term business of the film.
Meanwhile, another film "Margarita With a Straw" released along with "Mr X", but it also had a low opening. "Margarita With a Straw" starring Kalki Koechlin received rave reviews and since word of mouth is strong, the collection might pick up over the week.
But it remains to be seen who will dominate the box office over the weekend.
Meanwhile, trade analysts and exhibitors have predicted that "Mr X" will dominate the market.
"It has a much wider release (approximately in 2200 to 2400 screens) than Margarita With A Straw. The latter will be a very limited niche release with about 500 screens is what I am assuming, and only the national multiplex chains would release it and it's a sensible thing to do," exhibitor Akshaye Rathi told Koimoi.com.
"Mr. X has got a star who has the capacity to get the audience to cinema halls. With the later, it is not one of those films that is expected to be a money spinner unlike typical mainstream commercial film," he added.
"Mr. X will have a better opening but Margarita With A Straw will grow by word of mouth," exhibitor Rajesh Thandani told the leading trade portal.
