Nearly two weeks after leaked images of Lenovo's Moto Z2 Play surfaced online, a new report claimed Friday that the upcoming phone would come with a slimmer body, but at the expense of battery life. The latest tidbit of information is in line with previous speculation that the unannounced Moto smartphone could be an incremental upgrade over its predecessor, the Moto Z Play.
Although the new Moto Z2 Play will feature decent internal upgrades, it will lag behind the original Z Play in one key area -- the battery. According to Venture Beat, the Z Play featured an impressive 3510mAh battery while the new Z2 Play is likely to sport a smaller 3000mAh battery. The reduced battery size will obviously affect the device's usage time, decreasing it from 50 hours to 30 hours, the report said.
Thanks to a smaller battery, the Moto Z2 Play is expected to be 1 millimetre thinner and about 20 grams lighter than the Z Play, which was just under 7 millimetre thick and 165 grams heavy. However, it remains to be seen how consumers will react to Lenovo's decision to compromise with the handset's battery life to get a slimmer form factor.
While an inferior battery is almost certain not to impress consumers, the company is apparently betting on a set of somewhat modest upgrades to make them buy the Moto Z2 Play. Unlike its predecessor featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor running eight cores at 2.0GHz, the Z2 Play will be powered by a Snapdragon 626 system-on-chip running the same number of cores but at 2.2GHz clock speed.
What will probably grab consumers' attention are the enhancements in the memory and storage departments. Compared to 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage capacity in the original Z Play, the flagship successor will get 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage capacity.
Other expected specifications for the Moto Z2 Play include a 5MP front-facing camera, a 12MP rear camera with dual pixel autofocus and a 5.5-inch super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels.
In addition, the Moto Z2 Play will be available in two colours -- Lunar Gray and Fine Gold. The device is highly expected to be unveiled sometime in June, along with the Moto Z2 and the Moto Z2 Force.
