In a shocking incident in Kolkata's South city on Friday, three women from the same family jumped to death from the 36th floor of the high-rise residential apartment in the wee hours.
Amita Mukharjee (64) and her two daughters Mukta and Keya were reportedly in immense distress following the demise of their ailing father Nihar Ranjan Mukharjee (Amita's husband), prompting them to take the extreme step.
The family used to reside in the Golf Green area but committed suicide by jumping off the terrace of the South City Tower 1. The trio entered the high-rise in the late late evening saying that they were visitors and climbed up the terrace through the fire exit.
"They were probably suffering from acute depression after Nihar died of multi-organ failure on August 29," Mail Today quoted a senior police officer as saying.
The bodies were recovered from the lawn of the apartment at around 2:30 am by the security guard, who rushed to the scene after hearing the thump sound, back-to-back for three times.
Incidentally, a letter was also recovered from the terrace from where they jumped. It was dated Aug.29, the same date when Nihar Ranjan passed away.
Police is suspecting it to be a well-planned suicide act, but is baffled as to why they chose to end their lives from South City tower, while they could have easily done it at their residence itself.
"We suspect the mother and her daughters committed suicide out of depression," Shibaji Ghosh, Special Police Commissioner crime branch told IBNS.
In the six-page note, the trio had mentioned that they were distressed by the illness of Mr. Nihar Ranjan and were completely shattered after his demise. The note also mentioned the family's desire to donate their entire property to Rabindra Bharti University.
"We found that the letter was written on Wednesday where Amita had expressed grief on the death of her husband and said that the family's entire property was to be given to a university," Sujay Chanda, Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner told India Today.
