It is not uncommon to see your favourite singers shed tears at the Grammy Awards ceremony - some in jubilation and others in sorrow. Performances in tribute of some of the biggest stars in the music industry are always emotional.

This year too, big names like Sir Elton John, legendary producer T Bone Burnett, Mumford & Sons, Zac Brown and Brittany Howard of the Alabama Shakes will pay tribute to late Levon Helm who died of cancer last April at the age of 71.

Here we bring you some of the most emotional moments at the Grammy Awards ceremonies held so far.

1)      1982 Grammy Awards: It was an emotional moment when Yoko Ono, widow of ex-Beatle John Lennon along with her six-year-old son, Sean, accepted the "Album of the Year" award she shared with her slain husband. She struggled to hold back tears as she received the award just 15 months after her husband was gunned down.

2)      2010 Grammy Awards:  Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, and Carrie Underwood paid an emotional tribute to Michael Jackson by singing the superstar's "Earth Song" at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. Then Jackson's children, Prince Michael and Paris, accepted a Grammy lifetime achievement award for their late father.

3)      2009 Grammy Awards: Jennifer Hudson's performance at the 2009 Grammys was one of the most-emotional moments in the history of the Grammys. She tried to hold back tears as she performed the song, "You Pulled Me Through" just four months after her mother, brother and nephew were murdered. She broke down towards the end of the rendition.

4)      2005 Grammy Awards: Melissa Etheridge and Joss Stone paid tribute to American rockstar Janis Joplin by singing her song, "Piece of My Heart." It was Melissa's first public appearance after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Her head had gone bald from chemotherapy but braved it by giving a wonderful performance.

5)      2012 Grammy Awards: Whitney Houston was found dead at her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel just a day before the Grammys, bringing gloom to the whole music industry. There was not much time to rehears but Jennifer Hudson gave an emotional tribute to the great singer by singing her song, "I Will Always Love You". She broke down after complete the song.

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards function is scheduled for Feb.10 and the winners will be announced at the event.
