It is probably one of the worst-kept secrets that Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest car-maker, is working on a seven-seater version of its popular hatchback WagonR. Codenamed YJC, the new WagonR-based MPV is expected to make its India debut in early 2017.

Now a new report on MotorOctane suggests the work on the WagonR MPV is in progress and the model is likely to get only a petrol engine under the hood. Going by the report, the WagonR MPV aka YJC is likely to be powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine. Other details about the engine, including the power figures, are not known yet.

However, it is also said Maruti might roll out a CNG variant of the model. The new Maruti MPV is expected to sit below the Ertiga and is likely to get a price tag around Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom).

Although other details of the new WagonR models are scanty at this point of time since the model is in its initial stages of development, rumours suggest Maruti will start testing the new YJC MPV in India soon.

Maruti had earlier imported two units of new WagonR MPV to India for research and development purposes. Documents of Zauba — a website that keeps track of India's import and export data — indicated that the imported units of the WagonR MPV was powered by a 1,197cc petrol engine.
