VA Shrikumar Menon has confirmed that his debut directorial venture Odiyan starring Mohanlal and Manju Warrier has become the first Malayalam film to cross Rs 100 crore mark in the pre-release business.

Odiyan is undoubtedly one of the most-awaited films down south for several reasons. Written by Harikrishnan, the movie is a fantasy thriller based on the legend of the Odiyan clan, who in Kerala folklore are men who have shape-shifting abilities and can assume animal forms. Mohanlal, Prakash Raj and Manju Warrier's presence have created a lot of hype and curiosity about the film.

Mohanlal and Prakash Raj have huge fanbase across other southern states and the makers have dubbed Odiyan in Tamil and Telugu languages and planned to release all the versions across the globe on December 14. This is another interesting factor that has boosted expectations about the movie.

The hype surrounding it generated a huge demand for various rights of Odiyan and leading distribution house, TV channels and music labels were reportedly vying their hands to acquire its rights. Almost a week ahead of its release, VA Shrikumar Menon confirmed that his team has sealed the deals of selling all its rights and the movie has received Rs 100 crore in its pre-release business.

Nivin Pauly's Kayamkulam Kochunni, which was released in the theatres on October 11, earned Rs 20 crore in its pre-release. It was reportedly the highest ever amount earned by a film in the history of Malayalam cinema. Now, Odiyan has gone on to fetch four times more than this movie. Interestingly, superstar Mohanlal has played a guest role as Ithikkara Pakki in this movie.

VA Shrikumar Menon tweeted on December 10, "Happy to share the news that Odiyan has crossed 100 cr business mark yesterday evening 3 days b4 release. This is the rights and prebooking sale combined figure. 3rd film in south and 11th in Indian cinema history #odiyanrisng ⁦@Mohanlal⁩ ⁦@themanjuwarrier⁩."
