Delhi police on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly murdering a 10-year-old girl who resisted his advances.
The accused, Gopal, was taken into custody from Tughlaqabad Railway station while he was on the run. The incident took place at the girl's house in Pul Prahladpur, South Delhi, and Gopal was her neighbour.
Police said that the 35-year-old accused was previously charged for committing similar crimes back at his home in Bihar. "It was also found that Gopal was booked at his native place on charges of rape and molestation," Press Trust of India quoted a senior police official as saying.
Reports said that that the girl was murdered on Saturday evening when the accused went to the victim's place under the pretext of watching television there. Gopal then tried to rape the girl who was alone in the house.
When she resisted his attempts, saying that she would inform her brother about his misbehaviour, Gopal turned frantic and hit her head with a bread roller. He then dragged the girl to a garbage bin near Railway Colony in Pul Prahladpur, where he smashed her head with a stone. Her body was dumped in a bin, Hindustan Times (HT) said.
The girl's body was found Sunday evening after the victim's family traced the blood stains found inside and around their home. The police began a manhunt after primary investigation pointed to Gopal, who by then escaped from the spot. He confessed to the crime upon interrogation.
Authorities are waiting for the autopsy report to determine if the girl was raped, HT reported.
