In a new development, the fairly new Microsoft Lumia 640 XL has now received a huge discount and is available for purchase at $99 in the Microsoft eStore in the US. This edition is the AT&T-driven variant that comes without contracts.
Now, this development assumes significance considering the fact that the latest discount (of $50) is huge; this development also hints at the impending launch of the Microsoft Surface Phone that is expected to be a next-gen handset running Windows 10 Mobile straight out of the box.
At this point in time, rumor mills are working overtime hinting at the unofficial fact that the entire Lumia smartphone series would be phased-out by Microsoft to make way for the company's exclusively built Surface Phone.
There are also new rumours that the above Lumia 640 XL variant, once out of stock, would not be replenished with newer units.
Another worthy point to note, at this juncture, is the fact that the carrier-unlocked edition of the Lumia 640 XL (released in 2015) is completely out of stock at the official Microsoft eStore. This aspect adds substance to the above rumours that hint at the entire Lumia range being deprecated altogether. Nonetheless, Microsoft loyalists are averse to such a potential development considering the fact that Windows Phones have remained unaffected by major security issues; despite the presence of comparatively lesser apps within the Windows app repository.
As far as the Surface Phone itself is concerned, there are reports that this device would feature Lumia functionality such as double tap to wake along with being mid-range. Microsoft is yet to come out with official updates concerning its purported Surface Phone smartphone.
