Achieving the goal is success but maintaining the top position is true accomplishment. Micromax is seen doing just that as the company's YU brand co-founder Rahul Sharma shared new details about the upcoming smartphone.
After bagging enormous success with the first YU phone, the Yureka, the company is continuing the momentum with a successive model. According to Sharma, the next YU phone, codenamed Project Caesar is underway and will be launched in India in April, BGR India reported in an exclusive interview.
Micromax launched YU brand as a separate company to conduct online-only mobile sales. With an aim to target a different set of users, YU's first phone got off really well in India. YU tied an exclusive partnership with renowned Cyanogen, the biggest custom ROM maker, in India and attracted several people who wish to tweak their phones in different ways.
"We wanted to have a custom ROM for YU and were wondering whether we should do it on our own. Then we came across Cyanogen and we realised to reach that customisation level it would take two to three years," Sharma told BGR. "If it was just about getting into online sales we would not have gone to the extent of custom ROMs and things like that."
Sharma did not reveal much about its under-development Project Caesar but said the handset will be the best in its smartphone category. The only detail about the upcoming smartphone was that it will run on Android Lollipop version of Cyanogen OS 12. This will certainly excite many fans who were thrilled with the Yureka experience.
Yureka has been widely successful, which can be analysed with the series of flash sales it had in the recent months. Last week, YU held its seventh online sale for the Yureka smartphone and 30,000 units were sold out in just 6 seconds. The next sale is scheduled for March 5.
Towards the end of the interview, Sharma also revealed that YU will expand its product portfolio beyond smartphones and foray into the fast-growing wearables category.
